Dr. Mitul Vakharia is a cornea specialist and partner at New Vision Laser Center. He is a skilled cataract surgeon who employs the most advanced phacoemulsification technology and offers both toric and multifocal intraocular lens implants to his patients. He performs traditional corneal transplantation and newer techniques of lamellar corneal transplantation as well as keratoprosthesis, which is the implantation of an artificial cornea for severe disease. Dr. Vakharia is also an experienced refractive surgeon offering the latest all-laser bladeless LASIK technology with the Intralase FS femtosecond laser and the VISX Star S4 excimer laser including eye tracking, iris registration and custom wavefront-guided laser vision correction.
Dr. Vakharia is a suburban Chicago native who earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Cornell University in New York. He did his Internal Medicine internship at Evanston Northwestern Hospital and attended the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center for his residency training in Ophthalmology. Dr. Vakharia completed a fellowship in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at the University of California Davis, the premier training program in the country under the direction of Dr. Mark Mannis.
Dr. Vakharia participates as an instructor for a microsurgical course at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford, as well as a lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University.
He is a contributing author to the fourth edition of Dr. Brightbill's eminent textbook Corneal Surgery: Theory, Techniques and Tissue. Dr. Vakharia also has an interest in international ophthalmology and has performed free sight-restoring eye surgery for underserved patients in India and Haiti.
